Skate or Die

It’s not like Boonie is obsessed with skate decks or anything…

So the collaboration with Subsect Skate Shop in Des Moines’ East Village was pretty much a given. Six-foot skate rails in 1.5×3 rectangular tube. We drop a fresh batch of these beauties off at the skate shop whenever they run out. Get yours at Subsect or here.

Eatery A

Eatery A Ingersoll Des Moines Iowa Restaurant modern barn wood salvage

This is the culmination of a long, creative build, the brainchild of rockstar chef Jason Simon. This is Eatery A, the newest restaurant on Ingersoll, the most buzzed-about spot in Des Moines. Factor did all of the salvaged wood wall paneling, the floating drop-cloud ceiling panels, the barn wood collage wall, the steel mesh wine rack/wall dividers, the server station/wine glass stand, the steel beams and all of the exterior railing on the patio, and so much more in this space. Boonie loves working with Jason; he appreciates Jason’s creative eye and innovative spirit. It is a joy to see this space open—and to see Des Moines respond so well to it (there was an hour wait when we tried to go last night. That’s a good sign!).

Boonie and the guys got to sample some of the test food the chefs were developing during the build. Their verdict: The wood-fired pizza = phenomenal.

Here’s a look around.

e5w Communal Table

Des Moines is starting to embrace some unconventional office spaces, which is really rad. The new e5w building in Des Moines’ East Village is a mixed-use space with retail, condos, and office suites available to rent. Our friend, Brett Wilson, asked FF to fabricate a modern, custom table/island for the shared kitchen space. Turned out pretty sweet.

Snow Day!

Snow day. Des Moines is shut down. Schools and businesses are closed. Snow plows are pretty much the only things on the road.

Snowplows…. and us.

When it snows, Boonie has the heart of a 17-year-old boy in possession of four-wheel drive. Strummer and I bundled up and accompanied Boonie to work to “help” him.

After a hard day of unrolling and rerolling bubble wrap, Boonie treated us to a well-deserved lunch at the only open restaurant we could find in town: Open Sesame. Yum.

Nerding Out

We nerd out about a lot of things (music, cats), but my husband is at his nerdiest when he’s geeking out over staircases. His Pinterest board is comprised only of staircases and railings, and sometimes he gets so excited about one he’ll email it to me at work.

So you can appreciate how totally in-his-element he was to visit the Longchamp store in Soho on a recent trip to NYC. Yes, the French purse purveyor. Thomas Heatherwick designed La Maison Unique. It’s fabricated out of 1 1/4-inch hot-rolled steel and weighs more than 55 metric tons. Whoa.

Here’s a vid Boonie took so he could admire it again and again. And again. And again.

Exterior Steel Cable Rail

Just wrapped steel cable railing on a gorgeous new construction build in Urbandale from Pure Style Homes. Exterior rail is almost identical to interior rail, except the molding on top is 1×3-inch rectangular steel tubing. Finish is black powder coat with stainless steel hardware and cabling.
